The Launcells Horticultural Show will this year be held on Saturday 17th August.
For anyone who hasn’t been to our show before, or has never entered, there are many classes to choose from - vegetables (which includes vases of herbs), flowers, pot plants, floral art (using your own flowers from the garden or bought flowers), cookery (cakes, biscuits, bread etc), preserves (jams, jellies and chutneys), handicrafts (needlework, homemade cards or any handiwork hobby) and photography (with a variety of subjects). There are also 2 children’s sections - one for under 10 year olds and one for 10 - 16 year olds. The classes in these are varied and give the younger members of the parish a chance to enter, whatever their interests and hobbies.
Schedules are now available from any Committee Member or can also be downloaded from the website www.launcells.org or the Launcells Community facebook page or by emailing me at burn.farm@btinternet.com. Completed forms and payment - (20p per entry for adults and 5p per entry for children) need to be with Graham by the Wednesday before the Show (14th August).
Show day starts with setting up your entries, from 8am on show day. Cards need to be collected and placed face down with each entry. The judges arrive and start their work at 10am. Behind the scenes “helpers” follow the judges and write out the results cards which are placed with each entry so you can see who has gained first, second or third place in each class. At 2pm the doors open for everyone to see who has won what. It’s a very sociable occasion for both entrants and people coming to see what is on show. Teas and coffees are served and there’s a raffle too. During the afternoon winners are handed their prize money. At approximately 4pm entrants are told they can remove their show entries and soon after that the prize giving begins with cups and trophies for the winners. A group photo is taken to go in this magazine and in the local newspaper and there’s also a chance to purchase any unwanted items - usually vegetables and cake!
Many local shows have ceased (for example Marhamchurch and Stratton) so it’s very special that our local show keeps going so please support us in any way you can - new exhibitors are always welcome and will be helped on the day. If you have any questions, just ask!
